Steps
- Place the chopped brown onion into the slow cooker.
- Add garlic (as desired) to the slow cooker.
- Throw in one large carrot, ensuring it is chopped into small pieces for quicker cooking.
- Add three large potatoes, chuck them in as well.
- Next goes in about half a kilo of diced beef; ensure the chunks are small for even cooking and gravy formation.
- If using bacon, add it now (or use an equal amount of mushrooms).
- Add one cup of tomato paste directly into the slow cooker.
- Pour in whoosh sauce (about a tablespoon), giving it a splash.
- Add freshly cracked pepper to taste.
- Pour in 4 cups of beef stock (or mix 2 cups beef stock and 2 cups red wine).
- Mix one teaspoon of corn flour into some hot water.
- Pour the cornflour mixture into the slow cooker; this helps thicken the sauce.
- Cover the slow cooker with a lid.
- Cook on low for 5 to 6 hours, or on high for 2 to 3 hours. Do not lift the lid or stir while cooking.
- Once cooked, allow the dish to cool slightly before serving.
