Steps

  1. Place the chopped brown onion into the slow cooker.
  2. Add garlic (as desired) to the slow cooker.
  3. Throw in one large carrot, ensuring it is chopped into small pieces for quicker cooking.
  4. Add three large potatoes, chuck them in as well.
  5. Next goes in about half a kilo of diced beef; ensure the chunks are small for even cooking and gravy formation.
  6. If using bacon, add it now (or use an equal amount of mushrooms).
  7. Add one cup of tomato paste directly into the slow cooker.
  8. Pour in whoosh sauce (about a tablespoon), giving it a splash.
  9. Add freshly cracked pepper to taste.
  10. Pour in 4 cups of beef stock (or mix 2 cups beef stock and 2 cups red wine).
  11. Mix one teaspoon of corn flour into some hot water.
  12. Pour the cornflour mixture into the slow cooker; this helps thicken the sauce.
  13. Cover the slow cooker with a lid.
  14. Cook on low for 5 to 6 hours, or on high for 2 to 3 hours. Do not lift the lid or stir while cooking.
  15. Once cooked, allow the dish to cool slightly before serving.
